Sylvain Sester : He is a traveler-photographer and has been travelling all around the world for 20 years, in search of authenticity, regards, and encounters punctuated by photography and relationships. Twenty years of travel around the world have brought him from Madagascar to India, Burma, Chad, Southern Algeria, Venezuela and many other destinations. The encounters that marked these journeys affected him and generated him strong feelings such as joy, astonishment, or even sadness. During his travels, he prefers humanist photography and in particular portraits of the people he meets, an approach that very often makes him possible to intensify the exchanges. For more than 10 years, he regularly participates in numerous exhibitions, either individual or collective. On these occasions, he was awarded several distinctions, and in particular the 1st Photo Prize at the Rendez-Vous Image 2014 (RDVI) in Strasbourg, presented by Hans Silvester. He also exhibited at the “Voix Off” of the Rencontres Photos d’Arles in 2019. In recent years, he benefited from numerous press publications, both in the local press and in the specialized press, such as «Réponses Photos», «France Photo», etc. In 2020, Sylvain Sester published a book entitled «La Vie est Belle». It is a project of distant horizons, smiles, real and spontaneous joys that drive into the heart and are in my eyes like a hymn to life.

Exposition

The Sahara desert is a region of all contrasts. Constantly, we can be amazed, surprised, sometimes shocked; it’s like a day-dream. My project is the result of several trips in the Tassilli n’Ajjer in southern Algeria, in the Ennedi desert in northern Chad, and particularly to the Guelta d’Archei. How can we not be amazed with the vision of the magnificent landscapes that these desert regions reveal to us. But we are also under the spell of the nomads Tuaregs and Toubous, as well as the part of mystery surrounding their culture and their traditions.

We learn more about the farming of dromedaries in the north of Chad, in the Guelta d’Archei region, an amazing, unreal and timeless area. In meeting these people and given that their growing difficulties about water ressource management, we also become very sensitive to the advance of the desert that results from natural cycles, but also from climate change caused by a change in biodiversity (intensive agriculture, deforestation, warming due to the greenhouse effect and CO2 emissions…)

These regions are also heavily affected by illegal and dangerous activities, linked to jihadist terrorism, smuggling of all kinds and the migration crisis. The intimate nature of these destinations, as well as the difficulties of access, certainly exacerbate our perception, and make us live, throughout our journey, exceptional moments.
