Le papillon-vitrail

During our photographic trips, we are especially looking for butterflies. Among them, there is one that is different from the others by its great beauty, its relative scarcity and the fact that it can be met from the end of March to the end of November, in two or even three generations.
In France, we find it almost everywhere (except in a good part of the Hauts de France in the North of France), and in Belgium, we find it mainly on calamine sites (sites polluted by residues of extraction of heavy metals) where “Viola Calamina” grows in large numbers.

The small pearly (Issoria lathonia ) cannot be compared with any other butterfly. Its large pearly spots, which make it look like a stained glass, are characteristic of this species. Unfortunately, the butterflies are melting; however, they are not hunted for their horn or ivory, nor do they have spoilers like sharks to complement Chinese soups…, so they are not very newsworthy.

Since 1985, 18 species of butterflies have disappeared from Wallonia, disreetly and without emotions of nobody ! It is with sadness that we note these magnificent insects disappear or become scarce year after year. The photos presented will make you discover the beauty of this butterfly; they will be accompanied by explanatory summaries detailing their customs, their characteristics and the dangers threaten them.
