The central African rainforest is home to the elusive forest elephant. Smaller and more difficult to observe than its savannah relative, it is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Before colonial times, several million forest elephants roamed the forests of Western and Central Africa, but only about 800,000 remain today. Everyday habitat loss and poaching is driving them closer to extinction.
In Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, Republic of Congo, forest elephants till thrive. Biologists are studying them in order to understand them better, and protect them.
