Three Austrian photographers, the nature conservation couple Marc Graf and Christine Sonvilla, as well as their colleague Robert Haasmann have joined forces within the scope of their project "Living on the edge" in order to inform the public about means of coexistence between humans and large predators in Central Europe. Marc Graf and Christine Sonvilla are studied ecologists who work as professional nature conservation photographers, filmmakers/videographers and writers. They have already received a number of international awards for their photography work (Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Nature Images Awards, BigPicture, Oasis PhotoContest etc.), which focuses a lot on storytelling and long-term projects ranging from big predators in Central Europe to endangered wildlife in the Florida Everglades or urban eagles in South Africa. Over the past 10 years they specialized on wide-angle phototrapping, underwater photography, wildlife filming and timelapse photography, always aiming at unravelling special perspectives. Christine‘s and Marc’s stories have already appeared in diverse magazines across Europe (e.g. NatGeo, Geo, Universum Magazin, Terre Sauvage, Bell'Europa). In June 2018 a selection of their brown bear images was published in the German version of the National Geographic Magazine. Being independent filmmakers they produce films with a nature focus for Austrian national parks or nature institutions and as videographers also contribute to TV film productions (ARTE/ZDF, Universum Film). Furthermore, the conservation photography couple presents their conservation work within the scope of multimedia live talks and also hosts workshops as photography insturctors for the Canon Academy, sharing their knowledge, nature adventures and wildlife passions. www.sonvilla-graf.com Robert Haasmann works as a professional nature photographer focusing on landscapes, wildlife and conservation topics in diverse locations around the globe, mainly in Alaska, Scandinavia, Greenland and most recently in New Zealand. He is passionate about wild nature and untouched places. Capturing their beauty and bringing it closer to the beholder is an important part of his work. Big predators, especially bears, have fascinated him ever since he came across a brown bear in the Yukon some 10 years ago. Over the past years, he has dedicated much time to photographing bears in Central Europe. In 2016 he was named "Austrian nature photographer of the year" by the Austrian Nature Photographer's Assocation and besides that has already received several international awards (e.g. Asferico, BioPhotoContest, Glanzlichter). Being a photography instructor he passes on his knowledge and fascination for nature in workshops and photo tours. www.roberthaasmann.com

Exposition

"Living on the edge" is a longterm multimedia project reporting about nature and wildlife in Central European countries, thereby unraveling limits and chances for wildlife in highly populated countries. The project was launched by the nature conservation photographers Marc Graf, Christine Sonvilla and Robert Haasmann in 2015. Since then they have dedicated much of their time to documenting wild brown bears in Slovenia by means of high resolution wideangle DSLR-phototraps, stalking, hide photography and photojournalism. Brown bear populations in Slovenia are on the rise and spreading towards the north back into the Alps. Whilst there is little to no tolerance for returning brown bears in many alpine regions, Slovenia has found ways of coexistence that might be interesting also for other places in Europe. With their work, the three photographers aim at disseminating information and increasing awareness for large predators among the public. www.lebenamlimit.at
