Exposition
The practice of whaling, a powerful tradition since the Middle Ages, seems to be decreasing. The catches of globiceps, which are considered sustainable fishing, are the subject of major protests by animal welfare activists and environmental organizations. Historically, whales have been an important source of nutrition for the most disadvantaged people until the 1970’s. School doctors recommended whale lard, children ate it for breakfast.
Today, it is different: the whale has been declared unfit for human consumption because it contains heavy metals, mercury and lead. So a lot of people have stopped eating whales, but to completely eliminate the whale-hunting tradition is another “pair of sleeves”.
