Aurélien Midey is a landscape photographer based in Besançon, on the doorstep of the Jura Mountains in eastern France. Alongside his work as an operating scrub nurse, he spends his free time exploring the Jura ridges in search of mist, cloud inversions, and rolling waves of fog, capturing these fleeting moments with his camera and tripod.
At the crossroads of landscape photography and meteorology, his work reveals ephemeral atmospheres where light and clouds continually reshape the landscape. Several of his photographs have received awards in regional and international competitions.
In 2026, he published his first book, Immersion – Jura Mountains, a poetic exploration of fog that invites readers on a photographic ascent through the clouds.
Exposition
Immersion is the culmination of eight years of photographic exploration. Whenever conditions are right, Aurélien Midey heads into the ridges of the Jura Mountains in search of the phenomenon that has captivated him for years: waves of fog. He first encountered these spectacular cloud formations in San Francisco in 2017. After returning to France, he set out to capture them in a landscape he knows intimately—the Jura Mountains, stretching across the French–Swiss border.
Using long-exposure photography, he reveals the movement of fog driven by the wind as it flows over the contours of the mountains, transforming the landscape into a spectacle that is both fleeting and mesmerizing. Immersion invites viewers to gain a new perspective and contemplate this almost elusive meteorological phenomenon from above.
