Jean-François Mutzig was born in Lille, northern France, in 1962. In 1984, he moved to Provence, where he still lives today.
After learning traditional black-and-white darkroom techniques, he turned to photojournalism. Passionate about Asia, he has travelled extensively across the continent for more than 30 years, documenting the often unnoticed connections between people and animals.
Through his photography, he seeks to give visibility and a voice to those who rarely attract attention, moving beyond the stereotypes often associated with tourist imagery.
Jean-François Mutzig has published eight books and regularly contributes to regional, national, and international magazines and publications.
Exposition
While wildlife photography generally focuses on animals in their natural environment in order to study their behaviour, what about domestic animals and all the wildlife that lives on the fringes of human society?
This coexistence takes many different forms, depending on ways of life and cultural traditions. Animals take part in agricultural work. They may be used in games or bloody fights. Religious festivals in Asia require their presence. A tradition in Italy, or the beliefs associated with a Hindu temple, give a place and a destiny to creatures that are often despised or reviled, such as monkeys, snakes, and rats.
Whether viewed from an economic or a symbolic perspective, this photographic approach explores the powerful bonds that have linked humans and animals since ancient times.
