Giandra DE CASTRO is a Franco-Brazilian artist. Her exclusive muse is water, which she photographs without retouching at the edge of lakes, rivers… The photographer selects the strongest works among these ephemeral compositions, like an exhibition curator, then preserves them through photography like a museum conservator, raising her water-muse to the rank of artist. Since 2019, her work has been shown solo in over 60 exhibitions across 10 countries, at nature festivals as well as in galleries and contemporary art fairs. Her latest project, devoted to Japanese aesthetics through the prism of water, was exhibited at the Shiga Kogen Museum in Nagano, Japan, and is the subject of a book, Mizu No Katachi, 249 pages on the principles of Japanese aesthetics through the prism of water.

You would swear these are photographed paintings… Yet it is pure photography, WITHOUT RETOUCHING. We realize that categorizing a work as painting or photography changes the way we look at it. In your view, is a work of nature already art, or does it become art through the photographic gaze? Can these works be placed within the usual pictorial movements, or must we invent « aquatic movements »? The photographer chose invention, classifying the works by their optical and oneiric properties, mirroring the major movements in art history, since reflecting the world lies in the nature of water. In the age of AI, these images soothe and amaze, yet they also unsettle us: doubt no longer knows what to doubt.
