Photographs
Founded in 1971 by nine wildlife photographers, the Society for Nature Photography (GDT) now has around 2,500 members from Germany and 26 other countries. Its scope spans all areas of nature photography – from landscapes and wildlife portraits to underwater and drone imagery. A highlight is the International Nature Photography Festival in Lünen (since 1993) with talks, workshops, and exhibitions. GDT promotes nature and environmental protection, partners with Rewilding Europe, and has hosted the “European Wildlife Photographer of the Year” since 2001, with 110 winning images touring across Europe.
Exposition
The GDT’s European Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is considered one of the most prestigious photography awards in Europe. Every year since 2001, it has recognised authentic and often creative photographs that showcase nature in all its facets – from majestic landscapes and intimate animal portraits to powerful environmental stories. Categories such as ‘Man and Nature’ or the special ‘Rewilding Europe Award’, and often the stories behind the Fritz Pölking Prize, focus on nature conservation and environmental protection. An international jury selects the best images, which are then displayed in a major travelling exhibition throughout Europe.
