LYS – An Intimate Journey to the North

LYS – Qui signifie « la lumière » en norvégien et en danois, est un projet photographique, porté par Sandra Bartocha et Werner Bollman.

Pendant quatre ans, les deux photographes allemands ont voyagé dans le Nord de l’Europe, depuis les prairies et les régions boisées danoises, jusqu’aux glaciers bleus de l’Archipel du Svalbard, en passant par les côtes battues par les vents de la Norvège, aux forêts sombres finlandaises.

Sous le rougeoyant soleil de minuit, ou sous la danse d’une aurore boréale, sous une tempête de neige balayant la toundra, ou près des eaux calmes bordant les falaises du Nord, Sandra et Werner ont photographié, dans un cadre féerique, les paysages majestueux, la faune emblématique et la flore exceptionnelle de la Scandinavie. Leur approche est toute en nuance et en subtilité, où l’esthétique domine pour dévoiler les contours d’une nature fragile et restituer l’âme des régions nordiques. C’est ainsi que les deux photographes ont créé une œuvre enchanteresse, qui couvre la beauté unique de la Scandinavie. Davantage qu’une démarche photographique, c’est une déclaration d’amour aux pays du Nord.

LYS – which means light in Norwegian and Danish – is a large scale photography project by Sandra Bartocha and Werner Bollmann.

For four years the two renowned German photographers have travelled the entire European North, from the bright Danish woodlands and meadows in the South to the blue glaciers of Svalbard in the North; from the storm-battered coast of Norway in the West to the dark Finnish forests in the East.

In the glow of the midnight sun, or under dancing polar lights; in a snow storm over the tundra or on the quiet waters of the skerries, Sandra and Werner have photographed the impressive Scandinavian landscapes, their charismatic animals and their often diminutive but yet enchanting plants. And they did so in a very own aesthetic style, sensitive and nuanced. An approach which is far away from documentation, just as the character, the soul of the great Nordic landscapes and their inhabitants would demand. And with this the two photographers have succeeded to create something of unprecedented dimensions: a project that does not describe only a certain region or a specific subject, but an oeuvre which covers the entire and unique beauty of Scandinavia: a love declaration to the North. www.lys-publishing.com/en
